Oberto is a young boy who seeks his father on Alcina's island were they were shipwrecked. He does not know yet that the sorceress Alcina has transformed his father into a lion and believes her to be honest, kind and hospitable. In his first aria, Oberto laments the disappearance of his father in the company of Bradamante (who currently pretends to be her brother Ricciardo) and Melisso, who accompanied her to Alcina's island to free Ruggiero, Bradamante's fiance, from Alcina's enchantment.
